Hubris. I’m not a Denver fan, or a Tebow fan, but listening to all his condescending bullshit during the season about Tebow, even when he was WINNING games and filling seats, pointed to an even bigger problem: the mile-high size of his ego. Then he went and talked about how Tebow is the starting QB in the offseason. What a douche. In the same vein of Michael Jordan as GM (and part-time-semi-retired-washed-up-player) of the Washington Wizards, this move is going to go down like Kwame Brown’s career.
I’m a Redskins fan. An Orioles fan. I know stupid GMs and owners. I know big contract busts. This is a tailor-made bust-in-the-box delivered by Albert Haynesworth and Albert Belle. Buying big-time players with championship rings doesn’t equal a championship. With the right coach, personnel, and the right attitude, even mediocre QBs can raise their level of play and win. See: Mark Rypien and Doug Williams. Even the best QBs of our generation lose in big games. See: Jim Kelly, Tom Brady (vs. the Giants), and John Elway (2-3 in Super Bowls). And I would argue Shanahan created the system that allowed Elway to finally win those rings.
I like Peyton Manning. I really do. He got the shaft, but he also had it coming. Neck surgeries and contact sports are a baaaaad combo. Especially when you’re typically a stationary target. A healthy Manning with no neck injury would be a no-brainer. The Colts made the smart business decision, even though their hearts didn’t want to let Manning go. I don’t blame Indy for what it did, but everyone knows they’ll be better off now that they’ve unloaded a big liability and big contracts in favor of rebuilding. Andrew Luck will be cash money, on and off the field.
Tebow, for all his uber-evangelicalism, was still the classiest kid in that organization. That was nice to see last season. In league full of convicted felons, PED-users, rapists, and child-support paying millionaires, this guy built a f*cking children’s hospital in the Philippines; he took a 10-year old girl with neurofibromyalgia on a date and probably enjoyed every minute of it. I’m a cynical asshole, but I tip my hat off to the kid. My liberal Christian friends scoff and hate on this kid, but you know what? He lives consistent with his beliefs. I can respect that. Every other pro-athelete who wears a WWJD bracelet is probably a poseur.
Tebow has fundamental flaws in his game. But Elway better hope his cocky, lying ass just bought himself a Super Bowl within the next year or two, because I don’t see Manning surviving five full seasons of getting dinged around and beat up over a 16+ game stretch. Yes, Manning releases the ball more quickly than Tebow did, so he theoretically should be hit less, but he also can’t absorb a hit like Tebow can. And Tebow isn’t playing with fused vertebrae. Kid still has potential and more upside for less money. You can buy a lot of good players for Manning money. A dynamic TE (or two?) that can really be a safety valve and offensive threat in a read-option scheme, or another WR that can get after the ball… I can’t wait to see how this all pans out.
Somewhere, Elway, wiping the sweat from his upper lip while taking a dump, is probably hoping that he didn’t just make a 96 million-dollar mistake.
